Elevated levels of IgM aCL can be present transiently when associated with infections such as infectious mononucleosis or hepatitis C, or more persistently in autoimmune disease such as SLE and scleroderma. Generalized morphea, the severest form of localized scleroderma, has significantly raised levels of IgM aCL relative to normal or patients with systemic sclerosis. Antibodies to cardiolipin may be important in the initiation or progression of atherosclerosis and thrombosis, and are associated with recurrent fetal loss, stroke and other vascular complications. |
