Tobramycin is one of the aminoglycoside class of bactericidal drugs, also including streptomycin, neomycin, netilmycin, sisomycin, gentamycin, kanamycine, and amikacin. Due to toxic effects associated with aminoglycosides manifest as delayed-onset vestibular and cochlear sensory cell destruction and acute renal tubular necrosis, the goal of monitoring is to maintain therapeutic plasma concentration at minimum risk to patients. |
For peak concentration, collect specimen at the end of the
infusion or 30-90 minutes after IM administration. For trough concentration, collect specimen within 30 minutes before adminstration of next dose. Serum separator tubes are not acceptable. |
