Clinical utility
Antibodies to histones are detected in 30-60% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and in about 95% of patients with drug-induced lupus (DIL). In DIL patients, histone antibodies are usually the only ANA's, although antibodies to denatured DNA are detected in a small percentage of patients. Histone antibodies also occur in approximately 20% of rheumatoid arthritis.
