Clinical utility
To diagnose Cushing Syndrome, adrenal insufficiency and other disorders of the pituitary. Serum should be drawn at timed intervals after Dexamethazone is administered. A serum cortisol of less than 3 ug/dL is diagnostic of adrenal insufficiency; a concentration between 3 and 19 ug/dL is indeterminate. A morning plasma cortisol greater than 5 ug/dL after 2 days of dexamethasone suppression is diagnostic.
