Clinical utility
The amount of potassium excreted in urine varies relative to intake. Most potassium absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract is excreted in urine while a small amount is taken up by cells. Potassium filtered through the glomeruli is almost completely reabsorbed in the proximal tubules and is then secreted in the distal tubules. Normal kidneys excrete potassium at a rate of 20 to 30 mmol/day. Renal tubular acidosis, as well as metabolic and respiratory acidosis and alkalosis, affects renal regulation of potassium excretion.

Collection Instruction
After the collection is complete, mix the specimen and transfer
a 10mL aliquot of urine to Specialty transfer tube with a
green screw cap closed tightly to avoid leakage. Transfer
tubes are available from Specialty.
