Clinical utility

Used to evaluate hirsutism and masculinization in women or testicular function in clinical states where the testosterone binding proteins may be altered (obesity, cirrhosis, thyroid disorders). Total testosterone includes free testosterone, weakly bound testosterone (bound to albumin), and tightly bound testosterone (bound to SHBG or sex hormone binding globulin).
